I just got my PhD in philosophy in 2025 from a top-5 university, and the remarks you make about being frustration addiction, the discipline-wide cover story, your feelings of inferiority to colleagues, and your despair in the recognition that Claude Opus 5 is better than you at something you spent your 20's practicing--I feel the same way about every issue. I worked with Opus 5 just yesterday on a paper I have been writing for about a year now. Opus 5 solved the problems that were preventing me from making progress, suggested new, better arguments that I had not thought of, uncovered relevant literature that I had missed, revealed inconsistencies in my work, and drew genuine high-level connections which I found quite stimulating and generative. I was in despair. I have never felt that doing philosophy is pointless until I began working with Claude. Today I'm over the despair, but I have serious doubts about the authenticity of this work. Why should this paper even be published under my name? 'Mixed feelings' really undersells how deeply conflicted and torn I am.
